Denmark was occupied by Germany from April 9, 1940 — the same day as Norway — in an invasion that took less than six hours. Unlike most occupied countries, Denmark initially retained a degree of autonomy, but in 1943 the Germans dissolved the Danish government. Remarkably, 95 percent of Denmark's Jewish population was evacuated to neutral Sweden by Danish civilians in October 1943.
