The 101st Airborne's first objective — securing Eindhoven and its bridges so XXX Corps can advance north toward Arnhem.
Eindhoven was liberated September 18, 1944. The celebration turned to tragedy the same evening when a Luftwaffe bombing raid killed 227 Dutch civilians. The route from Eindhoven north to Arnhem — 'Hell's Highway' — was under constant German attack throughout Market Garden.
