The Ardennes in December 1944 was the setting of the Battle of the Bulge, Germany's last major offensive on the Western Front. The film's quieter sector depicts the war-weariness of veteran soldiers near the conflict's end, questioning what they are fighting for. Ethan Canin's screenplay is based on his novel set in the final phase of the war in Europe.
