Anthropoid — Czech Republic
May 27 1942 — paratroopers Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš ambush Reinhard Heydrich's open-topped Mercedes at this hairpin bend.
Heydrich — Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia, chief architect of the Holocaust, and the highest-ranking Nazi officer assassinated during the war — died of his wounds on June 4. The Nazis responded by burning the villages of Lidice and Ležáky to the ground and executing over 5,000 Czechs.
