Australia — Australia
Darwin in 1942 — Baz Luhrmann's epic backdrop to the Japanese bombing of Australia's northern city, depicted through a cattle drive and a love story against the war's arrival on Australian soil.
The bombing of Darwin on 19 February 1942 was the largest foreign attack ever on Australian soil. 188 Japanese aircraft in two waves sank 8 vessels, destroyed 30 aircraft and killed 235 people. The attack was deliberately downplayed by the Australian government to prevent panic. Darwin would be attacked 64 more times during the war. It was the first demonstration that Australia itself could be invaded.
