The 2018 series centres on the German U-boat base at La Rochelle — submarines departing into the Battle of the Atlantic intercut with a French Resistance subplot set in the occupied port city.
La Rochelle was a major Kriegsmarine U-boat base from 1940 to 1945. The massive reinforced concrete submarine pens, built with forced labour, sheltered up to 20 submarines and were impervious to Allied bombing. The base is separate from the story of the 1981 film, which was set aboard a single submarine at sea.
