The port from which the civilian small craft fleet set out across the Channel. The white cliffs of Dover were the last sight of England for soldiers going in -- and the first sight for survivors coming home.
Dover served as the primary naval headquarters for Operation Dynamo, directed by Vice Admiral Bertram Ramsay from tunnels beneath Dover Castle. Over 800 civilian vessels answered the call and made the crossing, supplementing naval destroyers and minesweepers.
