Italy's 1938 racial laws, modelled on Nazi Germany's Nuremberg Laws, stripped Jewish citizens of civil rights, property, and professions. Italy's Jewish community of 47,000 had largely assimilated over generations; most did not believe deportation was coming until it was too late.
