Sands of Iwo Jima — Japan
The film's climax — Sergeant Stryker's death at Iwo Jima and the raising of the flag on Mount Suribachi.
Three of the six men photographed raising the flag on Suribachi appeared in the film alongside John Wayne. The 1949 film was made with full Marine Corps cooperation and shaped the American cultural memory of Iwo Jima. Stryker's death was deliberately written as random and unheroic — a soldier killed by a stray shot after the battle was effectively won.
