Sunshine — Hungary
Three generations of the Hungarian-Jewish Sonnenschein/Sors family — from Habsburg assimilation through Holocaust and Stalinist persecution — all portrayed by Ralph Fiennes in a century-spanning saga.
Budapest's Jewish community of nearly 200,000 was Hungary's largest. Unlike Jews in German-occupied areas, Hungarian Jews were largely protected until March 1944. In 56 days from May to July 1944, 437,000 Hungarian Jews were deported to Auschwitz — the fastest mass deportation of the Holocaust. Budapest's Jews survived longer than most, but Arrow Cross violence killed tens of thousands in 1944-45.
