The Big Red One — France
Sam Fuller's 1980 autobiographical epic follows the 1st Infantry Division's sergeant and his four men from North Africa through Sicily and Normandy to the liberation of a concentration camp.
The 1st Infantry Division ('Big Red One') served in every major US Army theatre in Europe, from the Torch landings in North Africa (1942) through Tunisia, Sicily, Normandy (D-Day) and into Germany. Sam Fuller himself served with the division and drew on his own combat experience. The film was later restored to Fuller's intended cut of 162 minutes in 2004.
