Munich was bombed 74 times between 1940 and 1945 by the RAF and USAAF, killing approximately 6,000 civilians. The Allied strategic bombing campaign killed roughly 395,000 German civilians in total. The story's setting near Dachau concentration camp is deliberate — the novel alludes to the proximity of horror to ordinary German life.
