Rommel's Afrika Korps advanced 1,400 km into Egypt at its peak, threatening the Suez Canal. His defeat at El Alamein in November 1942 — and the subsequent Allied landings in Morocco — ended Axis hopes in North Africa. Rommel was later forced to commit suicide for his role in the July 20 plot.
