The Great Raid — Philippines
January 30 1945 — the 6th Ranger Battalion and Filipino guerrillas raid Cabanatuan to rescue 511 survivors of the Bataan Death March.
The prisoners at Cabanatuan were survivors of the Bataan Death March — the 130km forced march in April 1942 in which 18,000 men died of disease, starvation, and summary execution. MacArthur called the Cabanatuan Raid 'the greatest rescue operation in American history.' Not a single Ranger was killed in the assault itself.
