The Man Who Will Come — Italy
The 2009 Italian film depicts the Marzabotto massacre through the eyes of a young mute girl — the September 1944 SS reprisal that killed 770 civilians in the Apennine foothills near Bologna.
The Marzabotto massacre (29 September – 5 October 1944) was the largest Nazi massacre of civilians in Western Europe. SS Major Walter Reder ordered the killing of 770 civilians — including 216 children under 16 and 142 women — in the Monte Sole area as a reprisal against partisans. Reder was convicted of war crimes and imprisoned in Italy until 1985. The village is now a national memorial.
