Tobruk — Libya

Scene

The 2008 Czech-Slovak film follows Czechoslovak soldiers in the British Eighth Army defending Tobruk during the German siege of 1941 — one of the forgotten Allied contributions to the desert war.

History

The Siege of Tobruk (April-November 1941) lasted 241 days. The garrison of 14,000 men — including over 2,000 Czechoslovaks — held the port against Rommel's Afrika Korps. The Czech soldiers, fighting in exile for a country under Nazi occupation, were among the most motivated defenders. Tobruk was relieved by Operation Crusader in November 1941.
