Germany invaded Poland on 1 September 1939, launching WWII. Warsaw endured weeks of aerial bombing and artillery bombardment before falling on 28 September 1939. Over 25,000 civilians were killed in the siege. The city would suffer again in the 1943 Ghetto Uprising and the 1944 Warsaw Uprising.
