Defiance — Belarus
Deep in the Naliboki Forest — the Bielski Otriad builds a hidden camp sheltering over 1,200 Jewish men, women, and children.
The Bielski Otriad was unique among partisan groups in actively rescuing non-combatants. Tuvia Bielski's rule was absolute: no one seeking refuge would be turned away, even elderly or children who could not fight. By the war's end they had sheltered 1,236 people — the largest armed rescue of Jews by Jews in the Holocaust.
