The Heroes of Telemark — Norway
February 20 1944 — Norwegian resistance sinks the ferry SF Hydro carrying the final German stocks of heavy water across Lake Tinnsjo.
Knut Haukelid placed charges in the bilge of the ferry while other operatives created a diversion. The boat sank in four minutes; 14 Norwegian civilians and 4 Germans drowned. The heavy water — in 39 drums bound for Germany — sank to 430 metres. Recovered samples in 1999 confirmed it was genuine heavy water.
