The US Eighth Air Force began sustained bombing of Berlin in March 1944. The 100th Bomb Group earned its nickname "The Bloody Hundredth" partly through catastrophic losses on long-range missions like these. Berlin air defences included hundreds of flak batteries and near-constant fighter cover.
