The double-strike raids on Regensburg aircraft factories and Schweinfurt ball-bearing plants — among the bloodiest USAAF missions.
On August 17, 1943, the USAAF sent 376 B-17s on a double-strike mission to Regensburg and Schweinfurt. Sixty aircraft were lost — 600 airmen killed or captured in a single day. The second Schweinfurt raid in October lost another 77 bombers, temporarily halting unescorted deep penetration missions.
