Captured airmen are imprisoned at Stalag Luft III — the same camp depicted in The Great Escape.
Stalag Luft III held Allied airmen in increasingly elaborate compounds as the POW population grew. The camp housed over 10,000 prisoners by 1945. When Soviet forces approached in January 1945, 10,000 prisoners were force-marched west in brutal winter conditions — the Black March.
