Patton — France
Operation Cobra breakout — Patton's 3rd Army storms through Avranches and into open country, beginning the liberation of France.
The breakout at Avranches in late July 1944 turned the static Normandy campaign into a war of movement. Patton's 3rd Army covered 600 miles in six weeks, liberating more of France than any other Allied force. The German counterattack at Mortain failed catastrophically.
