Operation Husky (July-August 1943) was the largest amphibious operation of the war to that point. Patton's 7th Army raced Gen. Montgomery's 8th Army across Sicily in an unofficial competition. Patton reached Messina first but a notorious soldier-slapping incident nearly ended his career.
